As we read the Torah (the first five books of the Bible), it is so important for us to look for signs of Jesus. The Bible is all about Jesus. His creation, His sustenance, His protection, and His provision. We cannot divorce the Old Testament from Jesus; instead, we must look intently for Him. In this chapter, God reveals the Levites' responsibilities in the tabernacle. The whole tribe of Levi is set apart as those who will take care of the central place of worship in Israel. God tells Moses that He is taking the Levites instead of all the firstborn of children of Israel. He also reminds Moses that since the night of the Passover, every firstborn Jewish child is His. Now, he is substituting the Levites for all those children. He even says that the Levites' livestock's firstborn will replace the firstborn livestock of the rest of the tribes. Substitution is a massive part of what Jesus did for us. He took our place on the cross to pay the price for our sin. If He had not done that then the wrath of God would fall on each of us on Judgment Day. Just as the Levites took the place of all children born in the other tribes in Israel, Jesus took our places absorbing the wrath we deserved and dying a death we should have died. It had to be humbling for the other nations to know that the Levites took their firstborn's place. It is humbling today to know that Jesus took my place and my sin and offers me His right relationship with the Heavenly Father!

Help me, Lord, to look faithfully for Jesus in all the Scriptures including the Old Testament. Help me to never forget that You substituted Yourself in my place on that cross and took the penalty for my mistakes.
