Every single one of Jeremiah's prophecies against Jerusalem becomes a reality in this chapter. Nebuchadnezzar breaks through the walls of the city and begins his destruction of it. Zedekiah and his family and close officials try to sneak away in the night but are caught and killed right in front of the king's eyes before he is blinded for life. The palace is destroyed along with the grandest of houses in the city. Everything the Jews loved most disappeared right in front of their eyes. Nebuchadnezzar, however, had a different plan for Jeremiah. God's prophet was protected from the destruction and allowed to live where he wanted as he wanted. How is that possible? We always think it has to make sense, but God does not live by our sensibility; He works in whatever way He chooses to protect those who faithfully follow after Him. Jeremiah was not the only one that God saved from the devastation. Each of those people is a perfect example of God's amazing grace! They chose to follow Yahweh even when no one else did, and He not only noticed their faithfulness but protected them because of it. Oh that we could grasp the power of our God to protect us from the chaos and drama of this world. In many cases, our obedience protects us from the consequences of sin. God honors our obedience and faithfulness. Will we ever experience tragedy or heartache? No doubt, we will, but our God is still faithful in those times and protects us from what could happen in our most vulnerable moments. Jeremiah understood God's power and watched it flow freely through Nebuchadnezzar. Never underestimate what God can do for you as you walk faithfully with Him.

Help me, Lord, to walk in obedience and to enjoy the incredible blessings that come from it. Help me to trust Your power even when times get tough knowing that You are with me and will protect me when I am most vulnerable.
