As you read this chapter, you have to wonder if the writer is trying to fit in every little detail before finishing. He goes from hospitality, to marriage, to imitating leaders. It almost seems like vegetable soup until verse eight, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." As I read, I thought about how easily my opinions and attitudes can change, but Jesus never changes. A person captured by an addiction can do really well for long period's of time, and suddenly, "fall off the wagon" for no apparent reason, but Jesus never changes. His Word is absolute and unchanging meaning we can trust it fully to reveal truth to our hearts and minds. In that context, the words, "I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you" make perfect sense. Once Jesus has moved into our hearts and lives, He is not going anywhere, because He never changes His mind and decides to abandon us. This should stabilize our faith and provide a solid foundation to build upon. We cannot get caught up in the popular concept of the moment in the Christendom; instead, we must stay faithful to what He has taught us and what we find clearly in His Word. All of this lead us to a life of praise and gratitude. How can we not appreciate and applaud God's incredible work in our lives? As we do, we must also stay faithful in all that we do. We strive to be as much like the unchanging Jesus that we call "friend."

Help me, Lord, to strive to imitate Jesus in my beliefs, actions, and attitudes. Help me to submit to the truths of Your Word and living according to them.
